IRISH PARLIAMENT 1310-1800] The Statutes at Large passed in the Parliaments held in Ireland from 1310 [to] 1800, Dublin, Printed by George Grierson, 1786-1801, 20 vols., folio, publisher’s original calf with large gilt crest at the centre of each board. Also additionally W. Ball ‘Index to the Acts passed in Ireland in 1799-1800’, 1804, same format. 21 vols in all, complete with the particularly rare Ball index which was published later. All neatly rebacked for the Birmingham Law Society in brown tan cloth to match the leather sides and with black leather title labels. Vol. 8, the main index volume, is signed on its title page, 'Robt. Killaloe', that is Lord Robert Ponsonby Tottenham Loftus who was made Bishop of Killaloe in 1804 as a reward to his father, the Marquis of Ely, for supporting the Union. An excellent set of these important volumes which are a major resource for Irish history from the medieval period to the Union. This edition contains all the legislation, both public and private acts, of the Irish Parliament from its inception until its closure with the Act of Union in 1800. Benson and Pollard, rare book librarians in Trinity College Dublin, in an article on Irish paper used in the statues which was published in ‘Longroom’, no.2, 1970, estimated that the total number of copies of these 1786-1800 statutes printed was about 550 or a little more.
